Yorke Peninsula

Tucked along Gumbowie Road, the Coobowie Water Tank may be modest in size at four metres high, but its striking mural bursts with colour, movement, and local identity. Completed over 16 days by the artist duo Creature Creature (Chanel Tang and Ambrose Rehorek) in collaboration with Jason Parker, the artwork is a vivid celebration of Coobowie's unique birdlife and coastal flora.

Painted using a mix of hand techniques and spray gun application, the mural wraps the tank in a flowing design that captures the essence of the nearby Coobowie estuary and reserve. Birds take centre stage, with graceful depictions of the Great Egret, Black Swan, Royal Spoonbill, Pelican, Cape Barren Goose, and Pied Oystercatcher shown mid-motion or in serene poses. Interwoven with these feathered residents are striking botanical details, including Pigface, Mallee Bush Pea, Coastal White-Mallee, Osbornes Eyebright, and Clover Glycine — each rendered with bold lines and vibrant colour.

Together, the imagery reflects not just what makes Coobowie special, but how deeply place and environment are interlinked. The mural stands as both a visual landmark and a gentle invitation to pause and notice the natural life that surrounds this coastal township.

This project was proudly supported through the AusTrade Bushfire Recovery Grant, in collaboration with the Coobowie Progress Association, Yorke Peninsula Council, Yorke Peninsula Tourism, SA Water, and Wellbeing SA.

The Yorke Peninsula is the traditional lands of the Narungga (Nharangga) people, who have lived on, and cared for, this country since the beginning of time. We work, live and travel on Nharannga Banggara [Country], and we take time away from those pursuits to acknowledge and pay our deep respects to the Nharangga Elders of the past and present.

Today, it is essential that we continue to care for and protect our spectacular natural environment. Tread lightly and leave no trace. Learn more about responsible and respectful travel on Yorke Peninsula.
